About me
The Oki Story
Greetings! I’m Sabrina, a language teacher and enthusiast with a journey that spans from the vibrant landscapes of northern China to the charming abode of Virginia.
I have always been fascinated in language, culture, history, architecture, and food. I’m a wanderlust-driven traveler, exploring new destinations to feed my curiosity and expand my cultural horizons. My favorite travel memory includes sailing through the Nile River in Egypt, watching wild sloth at night in the Amazon jungle and camping in the vast plain of Maasai Mara, Kenya.
It only makes sense all my longings for language and culture led me on a career of language teacher at the Department of State. I find immense joy in imparting linguistic knowledge and fostering a love for language and cultural learning in my students. Through the years, I have taught many diplomats and military attaches, but my favorite group is my NSLI-Y High Schoolers.
In 2023, I started teaching the State department’s virtual NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) program. I am genuinely inspired by the loving of language and culture by my students. I have witnessed how much joy my students have in learning a new language, exploring a foreign culture, enjoying the food and connecting with people! However, NSLI-Y is a highly competitive scholarship that is only available for two terms each year, with very limited space, I wish more kids can have the opportunity to experience this!
Then the idea of starting OkiLearn came to me while I was in Okinawa training Special Forces! The Idea is to make something like NSLI-Y accessible to all kids who want to learn! With our short program, affordable price and awesome curriculum, your students can even try more than one languages they are interested in!
Life, to me, is a continuous journey of learning, exploration and growth. I approach each day with an open heart and a zest for discovering the beauty in language, family and travel. I am looking forward for you to join me on this life adventure together!
